Description
About this excursion to the Majorero cheese museum in Fuerteventura, Betancuria, and more
Fuerteventura can also be savoured. This excursion around central Fuerteventura shows you the island’s most authentic side: villages that live at their own leisurely pace, viewpoints boasting endless vistas, local culinary products that speak of tradition … and a different way of exploring it: along secondary roads and off-the-beaten-track paths. The result: a calm, delightful itinerary full of contrasts that brings together landscapes, culture and flavours.
First stop: Desert Queen
The day begins at a farm specialising in aloe vera, a plant that has been cultivated on the island for centuries. Here, you’ll discover its uses, its properties, why it is considered the queen of medicinal plants and why it is so important to the island. A natural, gentle, and refreshing welcome.
La Entallada Lighthouse: where strong winds blow
From there, the excursion heads towards La Entallada Lighthouse, one of the most spectacular lighthouses in the Canary Islands. Its Moorish architecture and clifftop location mean that this stop will become a permanent fixture in your memory, as well as in your photo gallery: be prepared to take quite a few pictures! Take the time to behold the ocean and capture the immensity of this island.
An artisan cheese dairy to savour the hinterland
After visiting the lighthouse, the route continues to one of the best cheese-making dairies on the island. Here, you’ll not only learn about the process of making Majorero cheese, but you’ll also have the opportunity to taste several local products. A treat for the palate, and one reason why this culinary excursion in Fuerteventura is truly worthwhile.
Ajuy: history, sea and volcanic caves
Then it’s the turn of Ajuy, a small fishing village where life is lived unhurriedly. Its whitewashed houses, serene atmosphere, and above all, its volcanic caves on the edge of the Atlantic, make this place one of the most important natural attractions in the centre of Fuerteventura. Here, you’ll sense how the land and the ocean merge into a single postcard picture.
Betancuria: historic capital amidst the mountains
After the coast, it is time to head deep into the heart of the island to enjoy the views from the Mirador del Risco de las Peñas viewpoint and then to Betancuria, the former capital. Cobbled streets, churches, colonial history … This stop sums up very well what to see in the centre of Fuerteventura if you’re looking for culture, calm, and scenery. It is considered the jewel in the crown of the hinterland for a reason.
A tasty finale: the Cheese Museum
Before returning, we will make one last stop at the Cheese Museum, located in the municipality of Antigua. In addition to its exhibition (which is ideal for learning more about the history of Majorero cheese and its relationship with the region), it boasts outdoor spaces that complete the experience with views, sculptures and tranquillity.
